Class capacity planning for independent gyms
Use attendance and coaching constraints together when deciding class capacity and timetable changes.
The room's maximum is not the coaching target
Capacity depends on equipment, session format and the attention coaches need to provide. A full class does not automatically mean the session works well, and an empty place does not necessarily mean the schedule is wrong. Compare attendance with waitlists and the coach's experience over several comparable weeks. Avoid drawing conclusions from a holiday period or a single unusually busy session.
A practical checklist
- Record booked, attended and waitlisted numbers separately.
- Note equipment or supervision constraints for each session type.
- Compare similar weeks before changing capacity.
- Check how a capacity change affects existing bookings.
Put it into practice
If a popular class repeatedly has a waitlist, consider whether an additional session serves members better than squeezing more people into the same room. Use software to make demand visible, then make the coaching decision with the people delivering the session.
