Learning gym equipment with a coach
Ask for a clear demonstration and check your understanding before using unfamiliar gym equipment.
Familiarity is learned, not expected
Equipment can have different adjustments and instructions even when it looks similar to something you have used before. Ask the coach to show you the setup relevant to your programme and where to find help if you forget. Avoid copying someone else's settings without understanding why they are using them. Your introduction should give you a way to ask these questions rather than leave you guessing from a picture or an exercise name.
A practical checklist
- Identify the equipment named in your programme.
- Ask about any unfamiliar adjustment or instruction.
- Repeat the setup with the coach watching where appropriate.
- Find out how to request help in later sessions.
Put it into practice
If you only remember half of a demonstration, say so. A second explanation is more useful than quietly improvising. When enquiring about Ascend, ask how new members are introduced to the room and their first programme.
