Useful gym notifications without overwhelming members
Choose messages that help members act, and avoid turning the gym app into a stream of interruptions.
Give each message a clear purpose
A reminder, a timetable change and a marketing invitation serve different purposes. Keep them distinct in the workflow and in the member's expectations. Write the useful fact first: which session changed and what the person needs to do. Avoid including sensitive health or coaching details in notification previews, which can appear on a locked phone. Delivery is not the same as a member reading or understanding the message.
A practical checklist
- Map the messages generated by booking and cancellation events.
- Check duplicate email and push notifications.
- Keep marketing choices separate from essential service information.
- Test links from a signed-out phone as well as an active session.
Put it into practice
Review a typical member's week of notifications. If the same event produces several near-identical messages, simplify the sequence. For important changes, make the updated information visible inside the app too, so the notification is not the only record.
