Getting members to use a new gym app
Introduce a gym app through a few useful tasks rather than asking members to learn every feature at once.
Launch around the next thing a member needs
Members are more likely to try a system when it solves today's problem: finding their session, booking next week or seeing their programme. Start there. A long feature announcement can make a straightforward change feel complicated. Give staff a short, consistent explanation and a way to help someone who has forgotten their password. Keep a support route available during the changeover, especially for members who do not regularly use apps.
A practical checklist
- Choose one first task and show it in plain language.
- Test the joining link on a phone that has never used the app.
- Put the same instructions in the welcome message and at reception.
- Collect repeated questions and improve the instructions rather than blaming users.
Put it into practice
For a small pilot, ask several members with different levels of confidence to book their next session without coaching them through every tap. Watch where they hesitate. Fix the wording or workflow before inviting the whole gym. Judge adoption by completed tasks, not by the number of accounts created.
